I. Purpose:

    1. a reliable and authoritative source for composer's works. with Kritischer Bericht = critical report
    2. the performance of works not in current notation (i.e. medieval, renaissance…)
    3. a place to find the complete body of a composer's work

III. Access to monuments and collected editions:

    1. specialized bibliographies (Hill, Heyer, Charles, ...)
    2. the New Grove lists of composer's works
    3. thematic catalogs
    4. card or online catalog (if cataloged that way) M 2's
    5. internal index (on only some editions, ex. Elgar, old Beethoven)
    6. searching volume by volume
