    OLD FORM             Mozart, Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus

    AACR2 FORM         Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus, 1756-1791.
 

    OLD FORM             Chaikovskii, Petr Ilich, 1840-1893.

    AACR2 FORM         Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilich, 1840-1893.
 

    OLD FROM             Clemens, Samuel Langhorne, 1835-1910.

    AACR2 FORM         Twain, Mark, 1835-1910.
 
 
 

II. UNIFORM TITLES
 

I. Distinctive titles -- are a unique title given by the composer in the original language:

    Tchaikovsky The Queen of Spades   [Pikovaia dama]

    Stravinsky    Firebird                     [Zhar-ptitsa]

    Handel       Messiah                     [Messiah]
 
 

II. Form titles -- are used for works which are "generic" in character: sonatas, symphonies, quartets, etc. They use the following structure: [Form, instrumentation, number, key]
 

    Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus Piano Concerto No. 23
    [Concertos, piano, orchestra, K. 488, A major]

    Beethoven Pastoral symphony
    [Symphonies, no. 6, op. 68, F major]

    Schubert Death and the Maiden String Quartet
    [Quartets, strings, D. 810, D minor]
 
 

III. Collective titles -- are used for generic collections of works:

    Satie, Erik    Music for Piano   [Piano music]

    Bach, Johann Sebastian Neue Ausgabe sämtliche Werke    [Works]

    Poulenc, Francis Les biches ; Bucolique ; Pastourelle etc.    [Selections]
